$7100 Raised for Cancer Patients at Rivalry Football Game

Cause Over Color: BG vs. Central Sideline Cancer Game

The electric atmosphere at Tiger Stadium in Hollidaysburg, PA, on a crisp September night set the stage for a monumental clash between two powerhouse football programs: the Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders and the Central Dragons of Martinsburg. This wasn’t just any game—it was the 10th Annual Sideline Cancer Game for BG, a tradition that brings together football, philanthropy, and an unwavering community spirit. The theme for the night, “Cause Over Color,” captured the unity of purpose that transcended the rivalry on the field.

Bishop Guilfoyle’s signature purple uniforms made them the perfect ambassadors for the Sideline Cancer mission. Yet, it was Central High’s student section that coined the night’s theme. The shared commitment to “Cause Over Color” exemplified the spirit of unity between the rival schools. Fans showed up in droves, donning Sideline Cancer gear—over 600 items sold—and donating generously, raising a grand total of $7,100 to support the recipients.

On the field, BG showcased their dominance, jumping to a commanding 23-0 lead. Central mounted a spirited comeback, but the Marauders held firm, securing a 23-12 victory. The win marked BG’s third consecutive triumph in a Sideline Cancer game and solidified a burgeoning “Bigger Than Football Rivalry” with Central.

Post-game, Central’s coaches sought out Cathy Griffith, President of Sideline Cancer, to declare their intent: “We want a rematch next year at Central!” This exchange underscored the mutual respect and commitment to making the Sideline Cancer Game an enduring tradition.

The night concluded with the “I Can Cup Chug,” a spirited tradition started by BG’s football seniors two years ago. Upperclassmen @tconsig13, @kisselljacob, @chase.kissell, @haydenhosgood_2, and @jessegeorgiana21 proudly carried the torch, celebrating the win while emphasizing the game’s greater purpose.

The cheerleaders from both schools played an instrumental role, rallying the crowd and collecting donations in the stands. Their energy and dedication exemplified why Sideline Cancer is often called “the greatest cause in sports.”

The BG vs. Central game wasn’t just about football; it was a testament to the power of community and the impact of high school sports in making a difference.
