Shortly after the Sideline Cancer SFU Football Game, a heartfelt email reached the offices of Sideline Cancer, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for cancer patients. The message came from a compassionate parent in Hollidaysburg, expressing the desire to organize a Sideline Cancer Game for James Miller, a courageous Somerset Hockey Player who had recently been diagnosed with Spindle Cell Sarcoma.
In a swift response, the event was set in motion and scheduled at Galactic Ice on November 14th, an earlier date than initially planned, allowing James Miller to actively participate in the game. The atmosphere was charged with both competition and camaraderie as Hollidaysburg emerged victorious. However, the true triumph of the day was James Miller becoming the FIRST patient recipient to play in a Sideline Cancer Game, echoing the resilience shown by Sideline Cancer TBT Pro Will Wise, who once became the first professional basketball player to compete in a pro game while battling terminal cancer.
Beyond the scoreboard, the event’s impact resonated in the community, raising an impressive $2,900. This not only provides crucial financial support for James Miller’s medical journey but also serves as a testament to the power of unity and compassion. The overwhelming success of the event has ignited a renewed spirit in James, fostering an “I Can Attitude and Believe Always Spirit” that will undoubtedly fuel his ongoing battle against cancer.
This remarkable occasion marked the first part of a two-part series. The next chapter is set to unfold at North Star High School, where James is a student, during the Jaycee Holiday Tournament. The anticipation is high as Somerset faces off against North Star, creating another opportunity for the community to come together in support of a cause bigger than hockey – a cause that unites hearts in the fight against cancer.
