Sideline Cancer Makes History in Connecticut: $7,200 Raised for Cancer Patients
History was made in Southbury, CT, as the Sideline Cancer Foundation hosted its first-ever event outside of Pennsylvania. This groundbreaking occasion brought together a group of talented young basketball players and their families to support a shared mission: raising funds for local community members battling cancer. The event, a basketball tournament featuring both boys and girls teams, proved to be a tremendous success, generating over \$7,200—a number that continues to grow as additional donations pour in.
The energy surrounding the event was palpable from the very beginning. Teams, families, and the greater Pomperaug community came together with determination and heart, exemplifying the Sideline Cancer motto: “I Can Attitude & Believe Always Spirit.” Organizing basket raffles, 50/50 drawings, and concession stands is no small feat, yet the community executed these efforts flawlessly. One of the highlights of the tournament was the morning session, which featured the girls’ division. The Pomperaug Lady Panthers, who had previously played against the Sideline Cancer 12U team during the Spring AAU season, came out on top, winning the inaugural Sideline Cancer Tip-Off Tournament. These young athletes not only showcased their basketball skills but also embodied the spirit of compassion and community that defines Sideline Cancer’s mission. Their victory was celebrated with the presentation of the “I Can Cup,” a trophy symbolizing the start of a new tradition in Connecticut.
The afternoon session featured the boys’ division, where the Mahopac 8th Grade Boys Basketball Team from New York emerged victorious in the Sideline Cancer Boys Tip-Off Classic. This team demonstrated dominance throughout the afternoon, showcasing teamwork, driving to the rim, and sinking three-pointers. Their outstanding performance culminated in a well-deserved win and a celebratory photo with the “I Can Cup.”
