Sideline Cancer Flag Football Game Raises Funds for Cancer Patients

Sideline Cancer Turkey Bowl 2024

The Sideline Cancer Turkey Bowl at Hollidaysburg Senior High School is more than just a game—it’s a cherished tradition that unites the school community while raising money for individuals in Central Pennsylvania battling the financial challenges of cancer. Spearheaded by dedicated teachers Mr. and Mrs. Jay and Mary Baker, this annual event has become a hallmark of school spirit and generosity.

The Turkey Bowl features girls’ flag football teams, each coached by male students. It is a spirited competition where athleticism, camaraderie, and community impact converge. In recent years, the stakes have risen with the introduction of the “I Can Cup,” awarded to the tournament champions.

In 2022, the inaugural tournament was claimed by the Pink Team, led by Abby Steiner and Ben Sosnowski. The following year, in 2023, the Black Team triumphed under the leadership of Hannah DiPangrazio and Cooper Tewell, with Lexi Peacock earning MVP honors through a school-wide vote. These moments have solidified the Turkey Bowl’s reputation as an exciting and meaningful event for all involved.

The 2023 Turkey Bowl was a remarkable example of how a community can come together to make a difference. Seven teams competed, raising nearly $1,000 for the Sideline Cancer foundation. This fundraising effort was a testament to the generosity and dedication of Hollidaysburg students and staff, all working to support those facing the financial burdens of cancer.

The championship game was a nail-biter between the Black Team and the Camo Team. With less than 10 seconds on the clock, the Black Team found themselves on the 1-yard line after two incredible catches by Makenna Anderson. However, the Camo Team’s Laila Panaro made the play of the day, pulling the flag behind the line of scrimmage to secure the victory. The Camo Team’s path to the championship embodied the “I Can Attitude,” earning them the coveted I Can Turkey Bowl Cup. Their teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship were an inspiration to all.

For the third straight year, the Turkey Bowl proved to be not just a competitive event but a powerful fundraiser, combining the excitement of sport with the mission of making a difference in the lives of cancer patients. Thanks to the incredible efforts of students, teachers, and the administration, this event continues to embody the “I Can Attitude & Believe Always Spirit.”

Hollidaysburg students, don’t miss your chance to be part of this tradition that combines competition, school pride, and a commitment to making a difference. Together, we can tackle cancer with the “I Can Attitude & Believe Always Spirit.” Let the games begin!
