A Night to Remember at Tiger Stadium: Hollidaysburg’s Perfect Kickoff to the 2024 Sideline Cancer Season

The atmosphere at Tiger Stadium in Hollidaysburg, PA, on September 6, 2024, was electric. The Hollidaysburg Golden Tigers squared off against Allegany High School (MD) in what proved to be more than just a football game — it was a night of community spirit, compassion, and triumph both on and off the field. As the first Sideline Cancer Game of the year, the evening set an inspiring tone for the 2024 season.

Everything aligned for an unforgettable night. The Golden Tigers delivered an outstanding performance, defeating Allegany with a commanding 35-0 victory. The weather was nothing short of spectacular, providing the perfect backdrop for a community rallying together for a greater cause.

Beyond the action on the field, the true highlight of the evening was the overwhelming support for the Tryninewski Family. Thanks to the generosity of the Hollidaysburg community, a remarkable $8,300 was raised to support the family through the Sideline Cancer initiative. This outpouring of kindness underscores the heart and unity that make Sideline Cancer games so special.

When you walk down the halls of Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School, there has always been one person that has stood out from all the others: Bryce Borowski. No matter who Bryce comes in contact with, he has a charisma about him that uplifts and inspires. On Friday night at Tiger Stadium, Bryce Borowski sent the Hollidaysburg football team, cheerleaders, student section, and parents into a frenzy with his epic “I Can Cup” Celebration following the 35-0 win over Allegany (MD). Of all the players that have celebrated with the “I Can Cup,” it is safe to say that no one embodies the “I Can Attitude & Believe Always Spirit” quite like Bryce. His unforgettable moment cemented his status as a Golden Tiger legend and left the stadium roaring with excitement.

The energy of the evening was beautifully captured in a striking photograph by @hburgyl, perfectly encapsulating the passion and pride of everyone involved. From the roar of the crowd to the players’ relentless drive, the game exemplified what can happen when a community comes together.

The 2024 Sideline Cancer gear debuted with a bang, quickly becoming a favorite among students and communities alike. At Hollidaysburg High School alone, nearly 600 items were sold, raising over $5,000 for our cause. Each purchase makes a difference, with $5 from every sale supporting a 10th grader, Isaac Tryninewski, who is bravely battling cancer.

Sideline Cancer’s 11th Consecutive Year in the TBT 2024

Sideline Cancer: A Legacy of Perseverance and Purpose in TBT

Sideline Cancer etched its name in history this summer, becoming the only team to participate in all 11 seasons of @the.tournament. This remarkable achievement reflects not just a dedication to basketball but also an unwavering commitment to spreading awareness about pancreatic cancer on one of the most prominent stages in the sport.

On July 24, 2024, the team faced @tbt_theville in a nationally televised game at Freedom Hall. The matchup proved to be an “Instant TBT Classic,” with both teams delivering an intense and thrilling performance. Despite a heartbreaking 71-69 loss to the Louisville Alumni Team, the night was a victory in other ways. It showcased Sideline Cancer’s resilience and provided a powerful platform to further their mission of supporting pancreatic cancer patients and their families.

This year’s tournament revealed exciting new directions for the organization. The game allowed the team to learn valuable lessons about their new roster while reinforcing the belief that a TBT championship is within reach in the near future. The shared efforts of players, coaches, and administration created one of the most enjoyable seasons on record, reaffirming the collective passion driving the team forward.

None of this would have been possible without the generosity of sponsors and supporters. Sideline Cancer Shines Bright at AAU Tournaments

July 2024 was an unforgettable month for Sideline Cancer’s AAU teams, as their hard work, determination, and team spirit took center stage in Kentucky. Over the span of two weeks, these athletes represented the foundation in four premier events: The NEXXT Circuit Championship, Run 4 The Roses, Select Events Championships, and The Basketball Tournament (TBT). Their journey was filled with thrilling victories, dramatic moments, and unwavering dedication to the Sideline Cancer mission.

The excitement began with the Sideline Cancer 6th Grade Team, who emerged victorious at The NEXXT Circuit Championship. Despite an early setback in the tournament, these young athletes displayed resilience and teamwork, culminating in a championship win. The team’s ability to overcome adversity was a testament to their character and commitment to “Coming Together to Sideline Cancer.” Their achievement was a source of pride for the foundation and an inspiring start to the competition season.

The Run 4 The Roses tournament at the Kentucky Exposition Center saw even more success. This event, renowned as the largest AAU Girls Basketball Tournament in the nation, featured 1,600 teams and over 1,250 college coaches during the NCAA Division I Live Period. Among the fierce competition, the Sideline Cancer 17U Select 40 National Team stood out, capturing the Silver Bracket championship in the Aqua Division—the highest level of the tournament. The road to victory was anything but easy, with highlights including an overtime quarterfinal win and a dramatic championship game triumph over their friendly rival, the Lehigh Valley Fever. The team’s performance drew the attention of college scouts, with more than 30 coaches attending their games. As the Live Period continued, the 17U team didn’t miss a beat, traveling to Cincinnati, Ohio, for the Select 40 Circuit to compete in front of even more college coaches.

Adding to the foundation’s accomplishments, the Sideline Cancer 15U Select 40 Team delivered a flawless performance at the Run 4 The Roses. Under the guidance of Coach Mike Reed, this team went undefeated in the Aqua Division, ultimately claiming the Gold Bracket championship. Their journey was capped with a dramatic final against Trae Young 3SSB. Down by one point with 11 seconds remaining, State College High School’s Sheree Wilson executed a clutch play, using a screen from her twin sister, Ceecee Hooper, to drive into the lane. With a perfectly timed assist, Sheree found Bishop Carroll’s Ava Pablic, who sank the game-winning shot as the buzzer sounded. The court erupted in celebration as the team embraced their well-earned championship. The 15U squad’s unselfish play, relentless effort, and cohesive teamwork left a lasting impression on both fans and college scouts alike.

These triumphs are more than just wins; they reflect the spirit of Sideline Cancer—determination, unity, and hope. The athletes showcased not only their skills on the court but also their dedication to a cause greater than basketball. Their performances underscored the foundation’s belief in the power of sports to inspire and bring communities together.

Celebrating the 13th Annual Sideline Cancer Golf Tournament at Scotch Valley Country Club

On a beautiful day at Scotch Valley Country Club, the 13th Annual Sideline Cancer Golf Tournament brought together an incredible community of supporters to tee off for a cause. From its humble beginnings in 2012 with just 13 foursomes, this event has grown into a cornerstone of Sideline Cancer’s mission, featuring 35 foursomes this year. Thanks to the hard work of individuals like Shawn McCarl and Jennifer Gregory, the 2024 tournament was a resounding success, demonstrating the power of community and compassion.

The tournament’s emotional centerpiece was an unforgettable speech by Tana Byler, a Martinsburg, PA native and a recipient of $11,000 from Sideline Cancer’s Patient Assistance Program. Tana, currently battling Triple Negative Breast Cancer, shared how the funds raised by her community have provided crucial support during her treatment. Her heartfelt words, including the powerful statement, “Greg Griffith has clearly left behind a legacy, and because of everyone’s support of my battle, I’m about to write my legacy thanks to you all,” resonated deeply with everyone present. Tana’s bravery and “I Can Attitude & Believe Always Spirit” inspired the golfers and encapsulated the spirit of Sideline Cancer.

The tradition of featuring a guest speaker at the tournament began in 2021 when professional basketball player Maurice Creek shared his journey. This year, the honor went to Tana Byler, who also spoke about the incredible support she received from the Central High School community during their “Bigger Than Softball Game” against Tyrone on April 9th, 2024. That event, marked by extraordinary generosity, raised $11,000—including a surprise $5,500 matching donation from local businessman Andrew Ritchey of Ritchey’s Dairy. It’s moments like these that highlight the profound generosity of Central PA communities.

The golf tournament also showcased fierce competition across three divisions—Women’s, Mixed, and Men’s. Congratulations to the following division winners:

Women’s Division : Michelle Day, Kristine Gibson, Rozzie Sky, and Kim McCarl
Mixed Division : Steve Pope, Phillip Pope, Patty Brouse, and Sharon Decker
Men’s Division : George Savine, Mike Maier, Frank Wiley, and Brian Hall

The Women’s and Mixed Division winners proudly took home the iconic “I Can Cup” as a testament to their skill and teamwork.

Events like the Sideline Cancer Golf Tournament wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of donors, volunteers, and participants. Together, we continue to sideline cancer, one swing at a time. Special thanks to the golfers, sponsors, and community members who donated their time and resources to make this event a success.

This year’s tournament not only celebrated the power of golf to bring people together but also underscored Sideline Cancer’s commitment to patient assistance. In the past school year alone, the organization has donated nearly $100,000 to support over 20 cancer patients in Central PA, reinforcing its mission to make a tangible difference in the lives of those battling cancer.

As Tana Byler begins her journey with the support of her community, she reminds us all of the importance of legacy—both in honoring Greg Griffith’s vision and in creating our own. Together, we can continue to Sideline Cancer.

Sideline Cancer Softball Embodies The Believe Always Spirit: Honoring Dakota Dixon

Two years ago, Ali Stinson approached Sideline Cancer with a vision: to create a softball program that played for something “Bigger Than Sports,” much like the Sideline Cancer basketball program. Fast-forward to today, and her vision has not only been realized but has flourished, with the Sideline Cancer Softball program growing tenfold and competing at an elite level. Beyond the wins, however, the program has stayed true to its mission: embodying all things “Bigger Than Sports.”

This past Memorial Day weekend, the Sideline Cancer Softball teams participated in the PA Impulse Fast-Pitch Memorial Day Classic in Shippensburg, PA. While the 14U team brought home the championship trophy, the weekend was about much more than the scoreboards. The softballers played with purpose, dedicating their tournament to honoring the life and legacy of Dakota Dixon.

Dakota Dixon was a brave soul who fought childhood cancer from 2016 to 2024. His journey was one of resilience and determination, inspiring countless individuals along the way. This weekend, the Sideline Cancer Softball teams paused to reflect on his story, taking to heart his reminder that “Every day on the field is a blessing, win, lose, or draw. We will not be judged by our actions on the field, but by the lives we touch off of it.”

Through their commitment to this mission, the Sideline Cancer Softball program exemplifies the “Believe Always” spirit. The players not only compete with passion but also strive to make a difference in the lives of others, continuing the legacy of Dakota Dixon and all those who have battled cancer. Their dedication reminds us all that true success lies in the impact we have on others.

Sideline Cancer Boys Shine at Made Hoops Circuit DMV Live Tournament

While the AAU Girls Program was making waves in Atlantic City, NJ, the Sideline Cancer Boys Program was busy showcasing their dominance at the Made Hoops Circuit Event in Fairfax, VA, during the DMV Live Tournament. It was an unforgettable weekend as five teams stepped onto the court, each one bringing their A-game. Among the highlights, two teams battled their way to the championship stage, and the 16U team stole the spotlight by taking home the coveted !

The 16U team, led by coaches Ron Coursey, Emneko Sweeney, and Trevor Orr, played with extraordinary determination and skill. Their performance was nothing short of remarkable, especially considering that this is the program’s very first year competing on the circuit. Most programs take time to find their footing in their inaugural year, but not these boys. They hit the ground running and set an incredibly high standard for what’s to come.

Across the tournament, the Sideline Cancer Boys Program displayed exceptional teamwork and resilience. With a combined record of 14-6, the program made its presence felt in every game. The 15U team, in particular, gave an impressive performance, coming heartbreakingly close to their own championship title with just one loss in the final match. It’s clear that every team contributed to an inspiring and successful weekend.

As the second of five tournaments in the Made Hoops Circuit, this event highlighted the dedication and talent of everyone involved. From the players to the coaching staff, the effort and preparation that went into this tournament were evident. It’s a testament to the strength of the program and the community that supports it.

Next up, the boys will take their skills to Harrisburg, PA, from July 10th to 12th. It’s another chance to see how they continue to grow and build on their early success. Their journey is far from over, and we can’t wait to follow their progress in the months ahead.

Sideline Cancer Hosts 1st Jr. High Fundraising Event

Sideline Cancer Hosts First Junior High Fundraising Event

High schools and colleges have been rallying together for three years to support the Sideline Cancer Patient Assistance Program, but now we can proudly add a new age group to that list—junior high students!

On a sunny day at George Martin Memorial Field in Bellwood, PA, Sideline Cancer, with the support of Ms. Ali Stinson, hosted a groundbreaking “Bigger Than Softball” event. This collaborative effort between the Bellwood-Antis Junior High Softball Team and the Central-Martinsburg Junior High Softball Team marked the first junior high event dedicated to raising funds for local cancer patients.

While the Bellwood-Antis girls clinched victory on the field with Lainey Stinson’s impressive 14-strikeout performance in just five innings, the true champions were the patient recipients: Krystal Fries from Martinsburg and beloved Bellwood teacher and coach of 57 years, Julia Roseborough. The event raised a remarkable $2,165, directly benefiting these two inspiring individuals in their courageous battle against cancer.

This inaugural junior high fundraiser exemplifies the power of community. It shows that when students, coaches, and families unite under the shared mission to Sideline Cancer, they can make a meaningful difference. Events like these highlight the values of compassion, teamwork, and determination that define the Sideline Cancer Patient Assistance Program.

Sideline Cancer ICAN Classic | 1st of its kind AAU NIL Competition

Sideline Cancer ICAN Classic 2024

The Sideline Cancer organization hosted a groundbreaking event at the Nittany Valley Sports Centre in State College, Pennsylvania: the inaugural Girls ICAN Classic. Taking place on April 27th and 28th, this tournament was not only a first-of-its-kind AAU NIL competition but also a powerful platform to raise awareness and advocacy for pancreatic cancer. With the tagline “Believe Always Together We Can Sideline Cancer,” the event brought together athletes, teams, and supporters in a dynamic celebration of sport and philanthropy.

The ICAN Classic stood out for its innovative approach to youth basketball tournaments. Announced on the Haigh-Homan Halftime Show by Sideline Cancer’s Executive Director Jordan Griffith, the event promised a $10,000 prize and featured groundbreaking elements like “Player Rankings” and the “Elam Ending,” distinguishing it from any other AAU tournament in the country. Every detail of the competition was designed to shine a spotlight on the talent and determination of these young female athletes. As Jordan expressed during the announcement, this tournament aimed to promote these players in ways never seen before while supporting a cause that resonates deeply with the community.

The competition was fierce, with teams like The HUrban Legends from New Jersey and SLAAM 16U of Pittsburgh battling for the championship title. On the final day, the energy in the gym was electric as the players left everything on the court. Ultimately, the HUrban Legends emerged as the champions, taking home the first-ever ICAN Classic trophy. The excitement and camaraderie among the teams, coaches, and volunteers underscored the event’s success as both a sporting milestone and a charitable triumph.

Throughout the weekend, the spirit of “Believe Always” was palpable. The tournament wasn’t just about basketball; it was a heartfelt effort to sideline pancreatic cancer. All proceeds from the event went toward Sideline Cancer’s mission to raise awareness and fund advocacy for this devastating disease. With a five-year survival rate of just 13% and approximately 66,000 people expected to be diagnosed in 2024, the urgency of the cause was front and center. Events like the ICAN Classic amplify the foundation’s commitment to turning hope into action.

Central High School raises $11,000 for Woman Battling Cancer

Central Softball Joins the “5-Digit Club” in an Unforgettable Fundraiser

Sideline Cancer events are known for their incredible community spirit and acts of generosity, but Central High School’s recent fundraiser for Tana Byler set a new bar. In an extraordinary display of kindness and teamwork, the Central Softball team, their boosters, and their community raised $5,500 to support Tana. But the story didn’t stop there.

Local businessman Andrew Ritchey, owner of Ritchey’s Dairy, made an unforgettable impact during the final hours of the campaign. He pledged, “I’ll DOUBLE whatever this community raises for Tana Byler.” True to his word, Mr. Ritchey walked across the street from his business, wrote a $5,500 check to match the community’s efforts, posed for a quick photo, and then went back to work.

The crowd was moved to tears by Mr. Ritchey’s generosity, which became a symbol of the Central High School community’s spirit. Many anonymous donors contributed to the fundraiser, showing how deeply the community cared for Tana and her family.

Central High School’s softball team and their boosters now join the prestigious “5-Digit Club” alongside Bishop Carroll, Central Cambria, Claysburg-Kimmel, and Northern Bedford. This achievement underscores the power of community and the profound difference a group of caring individuals can make.
